The following is a letter that I sent to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior on behalf of Alyssa Grayson, a 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Award State Honoree from Rhode Island.  She is a wildlife advocate who has lobbied federal officials about wolves on the endangered species list, volunteers by studying coyote populations, and is involved in family nature programs as a volunteer for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  She is a member of her Rhode Island 4-H at Kingston, RI.

Alyssa recently informed me of a program called Warriors and Wolves.  I will post about this program in a future blog. She is a great supporter of Stars for Cars and we appreciate all that she is doing to help bring the “3 Holidays Announcement” into Rhode Island schools.

Here is the letter I sent on behalf of Alyssa Grayson, Wildlife Advocate:

May 15, 2015

Sally Jewell Secretary of the Interior

Department of the Interior 1849 C Street, N.W. Washington D.C. 20240
Dear Secretary Jewell,

I am contacting you because Alyssa Grayson, Wildlife Advocate, has requested my help. She is concerned about the Red Wolf and the Mexican Gray Wolf.  She is hopeful that you will not give up on the Red Wolf and Mexican Gray Wolf recovery, continue to keep the Mexican Gray Wolf listed as endangered, and to keep the Endangered Species Act alive so that all plants and animals can have a chance at survival.

I had the pleasure of meeting Alyssa recently in Washington, DC as she represented her school, community, and state at the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. She was the top middle school level State Honoree for Rhode Island.  Alyssa has been a wildlife advocate since she was five years old and she is now fourteen. She is an active member of the University of Rhode Island 4-H.

Thank you for all of the vital conservation work that you do. I am in awe that you are responsible for twenty percent of our great Nation’s land and an agency of more than 70,000 employees.  I understand that you previously were the President and CEO of REI, an inventive and fun outdoor store.  My father and I enjoy kayaking and have been there many times.  You have such a long history of caring for our environment and I really appreciate this.  I am honored to write you on Endangered Species Day.

With Respect,

Jake Gallin, 13
